art endings and beginnings

My post yesterday referenced Alma Thomas and her artwork in 1968.

I'm continuing the art theme today with a tidbit on two connected institutions: the Washington Gallery of Modern Art (28 October 1961--September 1968) and Workshop Inc. (1968--present).

The Washington Gallery of Modern Art (1503 21st St NW) founders include Alice Denning and Julian Eisenstein. Apparently, WGMA supplied the city with excellent contemporary art shows for seven years.

After it closed, Lou Stovall--artist, teacher and more--founded Workshop Inc and operated out of WGMA's former home.

endings and beginnings.

I checked the Evening Star and Washington Post newspapers earlier today and only saw articles from 1969.

i would love to connect with Mr. Stovall and see if he has materials from his first few months.  Who can do an e-intro or arrange an in-person meeting?

I thank Elsa Barkley Brown and Kelly Quinn for suggesting the Archives of American Art as a resource.  I will also check there for relevant materials.  Unless someone has already gone through these records and can share.

What other places and artists were central to 1968 art scenes?
