DC's annual Emancipation Day Celebration is tomorrow, Saturday 8 April.  The parade starts @1pm, 1000-1350 Pennsylvania Ave, NW, the concert starts @3pm at Freedom Plaza, and the fireworks start @9pm at Freedom Plaza.

For more information, click here.

There will also be a panel discussion titled, "Marion Barry Reconsidered: Hope and Anxiety." The discussion takes place on Saturday 8 April @2pm, at 921 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, Hill Center - Old Naval Hospital.

"Historians Dr. Chris Myers Asch and Dr. G. Derek Musgrove moderate a conversation with Dr. Frank Smith, civil rights activist and a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and Dr. Alphonse G. Hill, former Deputy Mayor for Finance during the Barry administration.

Two years after Marion Barry’s passing, this panel with Chris Myers Asch and G. Derek Musgrove moderating will provide an opportunity to critically reconsider his life, activism and lasting effect on the city. Eschewing polemics, this session will present a holistic picture of Barry, teasing out the complexity of the activist and politician, while situating him within the constantly changing environment of post-civil rights era DC."

This sounds like a great panel discussion.
