#OTD-ish 1 November 1968 The Mildred E. Gibbs Elementary School (19th & E Sts NE) held a Halloween Parade. The students in the photograph above won prizes for their costumes. The photograph captions state:

“Prize winning costumes for the primary Hallowe’en parade.”

“The Hallowe’en Parade was fun for all. Money for the Junior Red Cross was raised through contributions to the witch’s pot.”

Your comments are welcome below. Did you, family members or neighbors attend Gibbs? Do you remember the parade? Do you recognize the students in the photograph? Were you a member of the PTA? Were you on the staff? What do you remember about Gibbs? Do you have materials from Gibbs? You may comment privately here.

I thank Kimberly Springle, Executive Direction of the Sumner Museum, for sharing the record books with me. I also thank the former business manager at Gibbs who found the record books at the school, saved them and then gave them to Springle when she visited the school to collect materials before the school was closed. It makes me wonder what has been lost as the DC government has systematically closed and demolished public schools.
